A flange is a connecting part used to join shafts or pipe ends; it can also be used on equipment inlets and outlets to connect two pieces of equipment, such as a reducer flange. A flange connection or flange joint is a detachable connection consisting of a flange, gasket, and bolts forming a combined sealing structure. Pipe flanges are flanges used in piping systems, while equipment flanges are found on equipment inlets and outlets. Flanges have holes for bolts to tightly connect two flanges, with a gasket used for sealing. Flanges are categorized into threaded (screw) flanges, welded flanges, and clamp flanges. Flanges are always used in pairs; low-pressure pipes can use threaded flanges, while those above 4 kg pressure use welded flanges.
Two flange plates are joined with a sealing gasket and tightened with bolts. The thickness of flanges varies with pressure, as do the bolts used. Pumps and valves, when connected to pipes, also have corresponding flange shapes, also known as flange connections. Generally, any connecting part that uses bolts to connect and seal two planar peripheries is called a "flange," such as in ventilation pipe connections; these parts can be called "flange-type parts." However, this connection is only a local part of a device; for example, it's inappropriate to call a pump a "flange-type part" when referring to a flange and pump connection. Smaller items like valves can be called "flange-type parts."

A flange connection involves securing two pipes, fittings, or pieces of equipment onto respective flange plates, adding a flange gasket between the plates, and tightening them together with bolts to complete the connection. Flange connections are convenient and can withstand high pressure. In industrial pipelines, flange connections are not visible in homes due to small pipe diameters and low pressure. However, flange-connected pipes and equipment are prevalent in boiler rooms and production sites.
