China's reserves of rare metals such as tungsten, indium, and rare earth elements rank first in the world, with output accounting for over 80% of the global total. China also ranks among the top globally in reserves and output of rare metals such as molybdenum and germanium. However, vicious competition and price wars have led to serious waste of China's rare metal resources.
In response, Chen Yanhai stated that it is necessary to promote the integration of the rare metal industry to form an industrial structure dominated by large enterprise groups. Relevant departments and associations will be organized to study and propose a draft "Rare Metal Management Measures" to improve the long-term mechanism for rare metal management.
At the same time, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology will also cooperate with relevant departments to strengthen resource protection and establish a rare metal reserve system. The ministry will strengthen guidance and supervision of rare metal management work in various regions, guiding local governments to establish provincial and lower-level rare metal coordination mechanisms as needed.
